documentA (13)

I have just come from a two-day tour of documentA (13) in Kassel, a town in the German state of Hesse. Courtesy of documentA, Kassel is the home of Joseph Beuys’ legendary 7000 oaks. Over the course of the two days at Kassel: the weather was spot on (however the heavens wept the day I left), the beer was refreshing and above all the art sucked you in! I remain convinced of the status of artists and the role of conceptual art in our contemporary existence. There was cutting edge lateral thinking to behold!

There is an art to experiencing what documentA (13) has to offer. The key is to relax and let the artists lead you by the hand. At this 100-day event there are multiple stories to be told and a multitude of ways to behold the art and hopefully have a dialogue with the individual artists. Over the coming days and weeks I aim to log successive dialogues I engaged in over the course of the two days I was in Kassel.

My aim is that each entry or log is an improvement on the last one, as I attempt to paint you an image of my take on documentA (13). There is no template of what is to come and no promises here , just hopefully a voyage of discovery. The entries are observations and hence not gospel. If this ride grabs your fancy, stay tuned to this blog and if you are digitally enabled and zealous you can engage me on Twitter or Facebook and hopefully soon on YouTube. documentA (13) ends on Sunday 16 September 2012, by which date I hope to have said all I want to say. If by 16 September I still have more to say, I shall continue, but only by popular demand, so get voting with your clicks on the GalleriaClic blog entries on documentA (13).

How many days to go at documentA (13)?
As of today there are still 68 days to go before the end of documentA (13)!

documentA (13)’s contradictions?

For one scary moment I thought Beuys 7000 oaks had disappeared into Ida Applebroog’s installation on the second floor of the Fridericianum at documentA (13). All that paper (see pic)! Even if it was making use of recycled paper. Now how does this square with Amy Balkin’s UNESCO appeal?

German Kunst!

While the place to be for sports, in 2012, is London, the place to be for art as far as GalleriaClic is concerned is Germany. So far I have seen Jeff Koons in Frankfurt, next I am going up the road (well 200 miles plus of it) to Kassel for documentA 13

Koons: High-priest of banality

Koons took over the Schirn Kunsthalle (art gallery) Frankfurt and infused the antiquity of Leibieghaus Skulpturen Sammlung. The Schirn’s promo literature calls the Leibieghaus infusion a dialogue between Koon’s and the historical exhibits “spanning 5,000 years of sculpture” , I call it an effective gimmick. Conceptual art can, sometimes, be alienating, this gimmick was a way of making Koon’s accessible. Both exhibitions feature all the Koon classics including the contrived “Made in Heaven” series. Ah, the “Made in Heaven” series; porn in nature, creatively licensed by heavy dose of interpretation!

GalleriaClic update: Dazed and looking ahead

Dazed and refused
Edward Ofosu is a talented portrait artist whose art we hope you will be seeing more of on GalleriaClic. You will be able to see one of Ofosu’s portraits at Dazed and Refused. Dazed and Refused opens on Thursday 21 June at The Arch Gallery. So why are we Dazed and Refused? Well it is a case of refused first then dazed as this is an exhibition of the pieces that did not make it into the BP Portrait Award 2012. However, no one was dazed for long, as they decided to turn the negative of rejection into this positive exhibition. Dazed and Refused ends on Saturday, 30 June, so hurry and catch a glimpse of all that talent and creativity that could not possibly fit into the National Portrait Gallery.

Looking forward to our new space
Apologies to anyone who might have wondered down to The Bookshop Gallery Hoxton in the last week. GalleriaClic and the resident artist Matteo Merla have moved away from that space. The good news is come mid-July we will be in a new space, please stay connected to GalleriaClic for more information on our new gallery.

Adamus: Last chance

Adamus: Contemporary Takes on the Original Man ends on Sunday 13 May 2012. In Adamus, the artists Matteo Merla, Ian Thompson and Joáo Trindade each explore the male form in their own unique and contrasting style. Each artist takes their lead from the classical practice of masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo and the strong examples of their representations of the male form. Drawing on the inspiration of this classical heritage, each proceeds to represent the male form in their own unique and contrasting chosen contemporary settings.

Reproduction prints of one artwork from each of the exhibiting artists are available for sale at the gallery. Online purchasing of these prints and other affordable reproduction prints will soon be available on www.GalleriaClic.com.

Adamus is at the Bookshop Gallery Hoxton, 83 Kingsland Road E2 8AG (Google map), which is a short walk from Hoxton Overground station. The gallery is open daily from 12 noon to 7pm. The Bookshop Gallery Hoxton, is located between Flowers Gallery  and the Geffrye Museum both on Kingsland road, two landmarks of the burgeoning east London art scene.

Adamus: Art by Joáo Trindade

Joáo Trindade, who studied and began his artistic practice in his native Portugal before moving to London, has exhibited across the globe. Trindade’s contribution to Adamus is a collection of classically vibrant anatomical studies juxtaposed against a background of contemporary and equally vibrant geometric scapes.  In 2011 Trindade’s work was selected by the Saatchi Gallery to form part of their exhibition stand at Art Paris , the modern and contemporary art fair at the Grand Palais Paris. In 2010 his work was part of the Sketchbook Project Tour, which toured numerous states across the USA.

Adamus: Art by Matteo Merla

Matteo Merla, a painter and sculptor who lives and works in London, studied at the internationally acclaimed and historically prestigious Accademia di belle Arti di Brera, Milan. In addition to drawing heavily on his classical roots, Merla is also inspired by both Greek and Roman mythology. These are the elements that inform both the narrative and motifs of his paintings. Merla is a regular exhibitor on the burgeoning East London/Shoreditch art circuit.
