A big thank you from GalleriaClic

A big thank you to everyone who came out to support us on the opening of our first exhibition Adamus. At the end of the night of Thursday the 27th of April we and the artists Matteo Merla, Ian Thompson and Joáo Trindade were left with a warm fuzzy feeling.

Thank you all for bringing what one of the artist’s on show described as a “positive energy”. If you missed the opening night , there might be another chance to bring and experience that “positive energy”. Why not seize on the opportunity of May’s First Thursday on 3 May and drop by the Bookshop Gallery Hoxton.

In the meantime here are a few things to remember:

  • Adamus continues until Sunday 13 May 2012.
  • Selected pieces in the exhibition are available as prints for purchase.
  • Visit the Adamus page for details of the exhibition.
  • There will be many more art and cultural events which will be taking place at the Bookshop Gallery Hoxton, so don’t be a stranger and sign up to the GalleriaClic website to be kept updated.
  • The Bookshop Gallery is at 83 Kingsland Road E2 8AG (Google map), which is a short walk from Hoxton Overgroung station.

Adamus: The male form in contemporary art

Adamus, an art exhibition looking at the representation of the male form in contemporary art, will be hosted at the Bookshop Gallery, Hoxton and opens on Friday 27 April 2012. The exhibition will feature the artists Matteo Merla, Ian Thompson and Joáo Trindade.

Art by Ian Thompson, Matteo Merla and Joáo Trindade

In Adamus, the artists Matteo Merla, Ian Thompson and Joáo Trindade, each explore the male form in their own unique and contrasting style. Each artist takes their lead from the classical practice of masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo and the strong examples of their representations of the male form. Drawing on the inspiration of this classical heritage, each proceeds to represent the male form in their own unique and contrasting chosen contemporary settings.

Matteo Merla, a painter and sculptor who lives and works in London, studied at the internationally acclaimed and historically prestigious Accademia di belle Arti di Brera, Milan. In addition to drawing heavily on his classical roots, Merla is also inspired by both Greek and Roman mythology. These are the elements that inform both the narrative and motifs of his paintings. Merla is a regular exhibitor on the burgeoning East London/Shoreditch art circuit.

Ian Thompson is an internationally collected painter and potter. He divides his time and practice between the UK and France. Thompson’s contribution to Adamus comes from his Memories of the Body series inspired by his reading of Memories of the Body: Tales of Desire and Transformation, a collection of short stories by the writer Lisa Tuttle. Interestingly, Lisa Tuttle’s reputation is as a feminist writer and Thompson injects this irony into his series of pieces focusing on the male form. Thompson’s work was recently selected and shown in the Royal Watercolour Society’s annual competition, which took place at the Bankside Gallery  in February 2012.

Joáo Trindade, who studied and began his artistic practice in his native Portugal before moving to London, has exhibited across the globe. Trindade’s contribution to Adamus is a collection of classically vibrant anatomical studies juxtaposed against a background of contemporary and equally vibrant geometric scapes.  In 2011 Trindade’s work was selected by the Saatchi Gallery to form part of their exhibition stand at Art Paris , the modern and contemporary art fair at the Grand Palais Paris. In 2010 his work was part of the Sketchbook Project Tour, which toured numerous states across the USA.

Adamus is on from 27 April to 13 May 2012 at the Bookshop Gallery Hoxton, 83 Kingsland Road E2 8AG (Google map), which is a short walk from Hoxton Overgroung station. The exhibition’s preview evening is on Thursday 26 April 2012, from 6 to 9pm. To attend the preview evening please RSVP galleriaclic@gmail.com, inserting Adamus RSVP as subject.

I Want To Tell You; London is multicultural!

I feel naughty. Why? Well, I am using that now much-vilified term ‘multicultural’. However there is no better way to describe the contributors to Matteo Merla’s crowdsourcing/mashup art project at the Olympic Gallery, Shoreditch on Thursday 2 February. Entitled ‘I Want To Tell You’, a diverse people, told diverse tales in diverse tongues. Now if the use of the label ‘multicultural’ here is perverse, I am at a loss as to what other label to use. There were messages in: French, Italian, Russian and Somali, just to mention a few.

I Want To Tell You Portraits

Back to the fun. The process is simple enough; in exchange for a deep and meaningful thought you will like to share with the world, and a small donation, you get to choose, adopt and keep a portrait of a random face in the crowd. While this is fun the exciting thing is that your message gets to be part of a special installation during the London 2012 Olympic fortnight.

You have until Sunday 12 February 2012 to be part of this London 2012 Olympic/art project. I ‘Want To Tell You’ is at the Olympic Art Gallery, which is open daily 12.00-19.00.

February’s First Thursday: Pick a face in the crowd. Any face!

It’s our beloved monthly First Thursday again and the place to be for February 2nd’s instalment is the Olympic Art Gallery, Shoreditch.

The artist Matteo Merla is doing a mashup. Merla is attempting to prove that mashups are not the sole preserve of web development geeks. And what are the ingredients of Merla’s mashup? Essentially there is art of course; in this case randomly drawn portraits, there is crowd-sourcing; to give it a social media edge and of course there is a heavy dollop of that event of the year: the London 2012 Olympic. In fact the London 2012 Olympic have inspired the project.

Entitled I Want To Tell You, Merla’s art project is an interactive event. His crowd-sourcing attempts start by requesting his guests on the day to adopt a portrait and this is where the fun begins. More to be revealed, by the gallery, on the day. The portraits are impromptu drawings of randomly chosen faces that Merla has spotted and memorised. The exciting bit is that you get to be a part of a special installation during the London 2012 Olympic fortnight.
